About Don

Don has been deeply connected to coastal and wildlife conservation for over four decades, with a special focus on the Jamaica Bay area in New York. His journey has seen him take on roles like Director of the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society, where he covered conservation efforts across New York and New England. In 2003, his dedication earned him the title "Jamaica Bay Guardian" from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

For 25 years, Don was a naturalist and manager at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, part of the National Park Service. During this time, he led initiatives like the Jamaica Bay Clean Sweep, which includes annual beach cleanups, removing abandoned boats, conducting wildlife surveys, performing annual barn owl and osprey banding, and restoring marshlands. His work also involved educational programs and leading patrols across the bay.

Along the way, Don’s efforts have been recognized with awards like the Conservation Hero Award from the National Audubon Society, the Environmental Excellence Award from the Environmental Advocates of New York, and the Graham Macmillan Award from the American Littoral Society. Despite all his accolades, Don is still out there, passionately protecting the natural world he loves.

Don’s photography, a passion he weaves into his conservation efforts, has been featured in top publications such as National Wildlife, National Geographic, and The New York Times. He also holds a Master of Science in Natural Resource Management from the University of New Hampshire and has taught at St. John’s University. You’ll find him actively serving on various advisory boards, including NYC Audubon and the Jamaica Bay Task Force.

His dedication has also been showcased in the documentary Saving Jamaica Bay and the Naturopolis TV series, highlighting his lifelong commitment to protecting the environment. Even after retiring as director in 2021, Don remains a guiding force, leading field trips and continuing his conservation work throughout New York.
